Resignation
Decisions, mashwarah and making sense of it all
The Message
I don’t even remember how all this came about to me. Happened quite quickly. Of course I did intend to move on, like I’ve thought of earlier, but the way this path opened to me is mind blowing. Subhanallah.
I was just scrolling twitter or github, I don’t even remember what was going on, I was probably looking through cheating-daddy, the application to cheat on interviews. I might’ve checked the contributors list, or the following of the app creator? Not sure really, but this person had contributed to a lot of places, and I do distinctly remember his portfolio being quite nice, the web one. I just opened his LinkedIn and shot in the dark, said my Salams and asked how he got his remote work. It was genuine curiosity, maybe he would tell me something I’ve overlooked or am missing.
He replied to my Salams, and somehow by the grace of Allah he said there’s a job his boss wants done. And he asked if he knew anybody with the skillset to get it done. To be honest, I didn’t have the exact skill set required, I’d dabbled in parts of it of course. I decided to go for it and see what would happen, took an interview where this person infact asked most of the questions, the employer only described his project and briefed me on it.
One thing led to another, we spoke for a long bit and this person was pretty impressed with me. Honestly, he may have overrated me, but he was very kind. He helped me confirm the job, I suppose he put in a good word for me to get a slightly higher hourly. It was about 40% more than my day job.
The Offer
I got started in no time, putting my Thursdays, Fridays, and weekends on this job. I said I’d put in about 15 hours per week, which I was, and I was saving the rest to hang out with the boys, go to the gym, cook (I don’t wanna eat SLOP).
I took my time and did it quite quickly and well I’d say, in about uhm a ~100 odd hours acrss two months? I’m talking about even today. However, about a month and a half into the project I did get offered the full-time role. It was a 60% pay rise. I was looking at a 80% raise, but I managed to accept this for the convenience, and immediate pay bump.
It was like the stars aligned, dunno if that statement is shirky, but it was all lining up. I had the initial discussions on 15th of October, at which point I had already made up my mind to move. There were a few variables still, but I was going to move on most likely. On I think the 18th, I informed Ramzy Bhayya about the offer. I would’ve loved to inform him earlier, but I wasn’t really looking up until that offer came about.
The Aftermath
I got my 60% raise confirmed, working environment confirmed, spoke to this other senior person my Bhabhi asked me to speak to. He did warn me of some things, but I don’t think they should be affecting me as such, unless I monumentally fumble some things.
I got to speak to Ramzy Bhayya on the 23rd of October. He did say somethings about how he could match it, but from what he could see of my perspective, this offer seemed like a no-brainer. I had also told my manager anyway, that this offer is a no brainer, and I know the WFH cannot be matched for sure. So I am informing, but its more of goodwill, than me actually being confused about anything.
We had a nice discussion, I made some parting observations about the team and its members, some suggestions, some good words were exchanged and I left the gym (where we had our meeting, interestingly).
Next month, almost my entire family comes over, my rental agreement gets over, I get a good pay bump and work from home, the ability and time to build something of my own, something slightly more persistent than a day job, and slightly less exhaustive of my attention span and daily involvement. I get to many go to Umrah also, in a bit freely, spend time in Qatar, maybe get that long over-due Driver’s License there?
We’lll see. Today I almost wrap up vibe-fixers. Lets see when I start whats next.
